El retrato de Adele Bloch-Bauer I fue durante mucho tiempo el centro de la Galería Belvedere austriaca. Pero la pintura fue confiscada por los nazis durante la guerra al coleccionista de arte judío Bloch-Bauer. Aunque, Adele Bloch-Bauer, en su testamento, pidió a su esposo que donara las pinturas de Klimt a la Galería Estatal austriaca tras su muerte. Después de una enorme batalla judicial en Estados Unidos y en Austria, un arbitraje vinculante por parte del tribunal austriaco estableció en 2006 que Maria Altmann era la legítima propietaria de esta pintura y de cuatro otras pinturas de Klimt. La pintura fue vendida a Lauder en junio de 2006. Se reporta que la Neue Galerie de Nueva York pagó 135 millones de dólares por el quinto retrato robado de Klimt, Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
