Museet blev grundlagt i 1863 og ligger i en bygning af Heinrich von Ferstel ved Ringstraße. Siden 2004 belyses MAK om aftenen af den permanente udendørsinstallation "MAKlite" fra landskabsdesigneren James Turrell. Museet indsamler og præsenterer blandt andet møbler, glas, keramik, tekstiler, design og smykker. Det ejer arkiver fra Wiener Werkstätte og objekter fra blandt andet Lucien Gaillard, Josef Hoffmann og James Turrell.
