Schnepfau ligger i den bagerste Bregenzerwald i Østrigs vestligste del, Vorarlberg, i Bregenz-distriktet sydøst for Bodensøen. Kommuneområdet omfatter dalen ved Bregenzer Ach mellem Au og Mellau samt Weißenbachtal og Höllbachtal øst for byen Schnepfau. Dalgulvet ved Bregenzer Ach ligger cirka 700 meter over havets overflade. Mod nord ligger Schepfegg, saddel på 891 meter til Bizau. Den højde, der danner kommunegræsen mod vest, stiger op til 1300 meter. Bjergene i øst når i Hirschberg 1934 meter. Grænsen mod sydvest dannes af de 2000 meter høje Kanisfluh, Runder Kopf og Sonnenspitz.
