Landet Gaum er et (smukt) stykke af belgisk-lotharingen og var, indtil for 170 millioner år siden, bunden af et hav, befolket med enorme reptiler. Denne bund bestod af sedimentlag af forskellig sammensætning: mergel, skifer, ler, kalk- og sandsten. Efter at havbunden steg op, blev den naturligvis skåret og eroderet af floder som Semois, Vire og Ton. På den måde opstod der i Landet Gaum tre bakkegrupper eller cuestaer. En cuesta er reelt en bakke med en stejl skråning og en blid hældning. I Landet Gaum er den stejle skråning rettet mod nord, den blide mod syd.
