La Terra di Gaum è un (splendido) pezzo del Belgio-Lorenia e fino a 170 milioni di anni fa era il fondo di un mare, popolato da enormi rettili. Quel fondo era composto da strati di sedimenti di diversa composizione: marna, scisto, argilla, calcare e arenaria. Dopo che il fondo marino emerse, fu ovviamente inciso ed eroso da fiumi come la Semois, la Vire e il Ton. In questo modo si formarono nel Land di Gaum tre catene di colline o cuesta. Una cuesta è in realtà una collina con un lato ripido e un pendio dolce. Nel Land di Gaum, il lato ripido è rivolto a nord, quello dolce a sud.
