La Tierra de Gaum es una (hermosa) parte de Belgalorena y que, hasta hace 170 millones de años, fue el fondo de un mar habitado por enormes reptiles. Este fondo consistía en capas de sedimentos de diferentes composiciones: margas, esquistos, arcillas, calizas y areniscas. Después de que el fondo marino emergió, fue naturalmente cortado y erosionado por ríos como el Semois, el Vire y el Ton. De esta manera, en la Tierra de Gaum se formaron tres cordilleras o cuestas. Una cuesta es en realidad una colina con un flanco empinado y una pendiente suave. En la Tierra de Gaum, el flanco empinado está orientado hacia el norte, la pendiente suave hacia el sur.
