Das Land von Gaum ist ein (wunderschöner) Teil von belgisch-Lothringen und war bis vor 170 Millionen Jahren der Boden eines Meeres, das von riesigen Reptilien bevölkert war. Dieser Boden bestand aus Sedimentschichten unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung: Mergel, Schiefer, Ton, Kalk- und Sandstein. Nachdem der Meeresboden emporstieg, wurde er natürlich durch Flüsse wie die Semois, die Vire und die Ton zerschnitten und erodiert. Auf diese Weise entstanden im Land von Gaum drei Hügelzüge oder Cuestas. Eine Cuesta ist im Grunde genommen ein Hügel mit einem steilen Hang und einem sanften Abhang. Im Land von Gaum ist der steile Hang nach Norden gerichtet, der sanfte nach Süden.
