Den 9. maj 1950 blev pladsen opkaldt efter Robert Schuman, den franske udenrigsminister. Han mente, at spørgsmålet om Vesteuropa omkring kul- og stålproduktion var noget, der skulle håndteres fælles. Dette blev grundlaget for Den Europæiske Union. Jean Monnet var den åndelige fader til EU-planen. Jean Monnet ønskede at forhindre, at den gamle europæiske oprør faldt tilbage, men han ønskede også at udnytte ressourcerne så godt som muligt. Hans grundsætning var, at samarbejde fører til venskab.
