On May 9, 1950 this square was named after Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister. He thought that the question of Western Europe around coal and steel production was something that had to be arranged in a common agreement. This became the basis of the European Union. Jean Monnet was the spiritual father of the plan of the EU. Jean Monnet wanted to exploit the resources as effectively as possible. The basis was that cooperation would lead to friendship.
