Le 9 mai 1950, la place a été nommée en l'honneur de Robert Schuman, le ministre français des Affaires étrangères. Il estimait que la question de l'Europe de l'Ouest concernant la production de charbon et d'acier devait être traitée de manière commune. Cela a été le fondement de l'Union européenne. Jean Monnet était le père spirituel du plan de l'UE. Jean Monnet voulait éviter que la vieille révolte européenne ne tombe à nouveau dans le chaos, mais il voulait également exploiter les ressources le mieux possible. Son principe était que la coopération mène à l'amitié.
