Am 9. Mai 1950 wurde der Platz nach Robert Schuman, dem französischen Außenminister, benannt. Er war der Meinung, dass die Frage der Kohlen- und Stahlproduktion in Westeuropa gemeinsam geregelt werden müsse. Dies wurde die Grundlage der Europäischen Union. Jean Monnet war der geistige Vater des Plans der EU. Jean Monnet wollte verhindern, dass die alte europäische Revolte wieder aufflammt, aber er wollte auch die Ressourcen so gut wie möglich nutzen. Seine Grundlage war, dass Zusammenarbeit zu Freundschaft führt.
