Det paladslignende slot blev bygget fra 1770, sandsynligvis af den liège arkitekt Etienne Fayen, for prins-biskop af Liège Franciscus Karel de Velbrück.
Som naturelsker valgte prins-biskoppen dette sted i det let kuperede Haspengouw for at bygge sin sommerbolig og lysthave. Han fik anlagt en kinesisk have, en rosenhave og en køkkenhave. Senere blev slottet udsmykket med en af de første landskabsparker på det europæiske fastland, inspireret af engelsk havearkitektur af Capability Brown.
