El castillo palaciego fue construido a partir de 1770, probablemente por el arquitecto de Lieja Etienne Fayen, para el príncipe obispo de Lieja Francisco Carlos de Velbrück.
Como amante de la naturaleza, el príncipe obispo eligió este lugar en la levemente ondulada Haspengouw para construir su residencia de verano y jardín de placer. Hizo que se creara un jardín chino, un jardín de rosas y un huerto. Más tarde, el castillo fue embellecido con uno de los primeros parques paisajísticos en el continente europeo, inspirado por la arquitectura de jardines inglesa de Capability Brown.
