Das palastartige Schloss wurde ab 1770 errichtet, wahrscheinlich von dem Lütticher Architekten Etienne Fayen, für den Fürstbischof von Lüttich, Franz Karl von Velbrück.
Als Liebhaber der Natur wählte der Fürstbischof diesen Ort in der sanften Hügellandschaft der Haspengau aus, um dort sein Sommerresidenz und Lustgarten zu errichten. Er ließ einen chinesischen Garten, einen Rosengarten und einen Gemüsegarten anlegen. Später wurde das Schloss mit einem der ersten Landschaftsparks auf dem europäischen Festland verschönert, inspiriert von der englischen Gartenarchitektur von Capability Brown.
