Il castello palaziale fu costruito a partire dal 1770, probabilmente dall'architetto di Liegi Etienne Fayen, per il principe-vescovo di Liegi Francesco Carlo de Velbrück.
Da amante della natura, il principe-vescovo scelse questo luogo nella leggera collina di Haspengouw per costruire la sua residenza estiva e giardino di delizie. Fece realizzare un giardino cinese, un roseto e un orto. In seguito, il castello fu abbellito con uno dei primi parchi paesaggistici sul continente europeo, ispirato all'architettura dei giardini inglesi di Capability Brown.
