Aartrijke optræder for første gang i et dokument fra 893 som "Artiriacum". Landsbyen var dengang ejet af greven af Flandern. I magtvakuummet under vikingernes angreb havde greven ulovligt overtaget villaen Artiriacum fra biskoppen af Doornik-Noyon.
