Den 28. marts 1629 købte Jan VIII af Nassau-Siegen baroniet Ronse fra de sidste efterkommere af Granvelle'erne. I april 1630 begyndte han byggeriet af slottet, som skulle være sammenligneligt med de adelsboliger i Bruxelles, og han bosatte sig som den første herre på regelmæssig basis i Ronse.
Det blev et monumentalt slot, der måtte fungere som forfædres slot for den katolske gren af Nassauene i de sydlige Nederlande. Jan af Nassau brugte næsten alle sine økonomiske midler på slottet, som blev færdiggjort efter pestepidemien fra 1635-1636.
