El 28 de marzo de 1629, Jan VIII de Nassau-Siegen compró la baronía de Ronse a los últimos descendientes de los Granvelle. En abril de 1630, comenzó la construcción del castillo, similar a las residencias nobles en Bruselas, y se estableció como el primer señor de manera regular en Ronse.
Se convirtió en un castillo monumental, que debía servir como castillo ancestral de la rama católica de los Nassau en los Países Bajos Meridionales. Jan de Nassau gastó casi todos sus recursos económicos en el castillo, que se completó tras la epidemia de peste de 1635-1636.
