Den 13., 14. og 15. august 1695 bombarderede styrkerne fra kong Ludvig XIV af Frankrig Bruxelles og satte centrum i brand. Bombardementet af Bruxelles var den mest ødelæggende katastrofe i byens historie. At angribe et civilt mål uden militær betydning var allerede dengang en skændsel.
Hvor mange mennesker der er omkommet i den totale krig mod franskmændene, vides ikke. De ødelagte bygninger, kunstværker og arkiver er bedre dokumenteret.
