Op 13, 14 en 15 augustus 1695 bombardeerden de troepen van koning Lodewijk XIV van Frankrijk Brussel en schoten ze het centrum in brand. Het bombardement op Brussel was de meest vernietigende ramp uit de geschiedenis van de stad. Het aanvallen van een burgerdoelwit zonder militaire betekenis was ook in die tijd al een schande.
Hoeveel mensen zijn omgekomen bij de totale oorlog van de Fransen, is niet bekend. De teloorgegane gebouwen, kunstwerken en archieven zijn beter gedocumenteerd.
