Kirken, helliget til Alexius af Edessa og Katharina af Alexandria, erstattede en midlertidig kirke, der blev indviet i 1596. Beguinerne bosatte sig på grund, givet dem af Alexianerne, efter at de oprindeligt var blevet på stedet nær den nuværende Begijnestraat i det 13. århundrede. Efter 1259 flyttede de uden for bymurene i trekanten mellem Oscar van Kesbeeckstraat-Afleidingsdijle-Maurits Sabbestraat. Efter religionsurolighederne i det 16. århundrede vendte de tilbage inden for byens mure, først nær Keizerstraat, og senere gradvist tog de nabolaget ved den nuværende Nonnenstraat som deres permanente opholdssted.
