La chiesa, dedicata a San Alessandro di Edessa e Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, sostituì una chiesa provvisoria consacrata nel 1596. Le begine si stabilirono su un terreno donato loro dagli Alexiani dopo aver vissuto inizialmente nel XIII secolo nei pressi dell'attuale Via delle Beggine. Dopo il 1259 si trasferirono al di fuori delle mura della città nel triangolo tra Via Oscar van Kesbeeck-Afleidingsdijle-Via Maurits Sabbe. Dopo le turbolenze religiose del XVI secolo tornarono all'interno delle mura della città, prima nei pressi di Via dell'Imperatore, poi progressivamente occuparono come residenza definitiva il quartiere dell'attuale Via delle Monache.
