I 1985 blev Massimo Dutti grundlagt i Spanien. I første omgang blev der kun solgt herretøj. I 1995 lancerede de den første kollektion af dametøj, med et varieret udvalg af stilarter fra afslappet til raffineret og tidløst. I dag har de en kommerciel tilstedeværelse i 68 lande, herunder Europa, Amerika, Asien med mere end 700 butikker.
Kæderne tilhører Inditex-gruppen, en af de største modeforhandlere i verden med mere end 6.460 butikker i 88 lande fordelt over 5 kontinenter. Ud over Massimo Dutti og Zara tilhører følgende mærker også Inditex-gruppen; Pull&Bear, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Zara Home og Uterquë.
