På landsbyens kirkegård i Ligneuville ligger graven til en vis hr. Arthur Hawarden. Først efter hans død opdagede man, at der bag dette navn ikke gemte sig en mand, men en velhavende dame: den ekstravagante parisienne Mériora Gillibrand.
Efter at Mériora havde myrdet sin elsker i Wien, tog hun uden at blinke en anden identitet for at undgå sin straf. Sammen med sin hushjælp, som var den eneste, der vidste, hvem hun virkelig var, flygtede hun som Arthur Hawarden. Således endte hun i Ligneuville, hvor hun til sidst døde af en lungesygdom.
Hendes ekstraordinære livshistorie dannede grundlaget for en roman og blev i 1968 endda filmatiseret af den belgiske instruktør Harry Kümel.
