Sulla cappella del villaggio di Ligneuville si trova la tomba di un certo signor Arthur Hawarden. Solo dopo la sua morte si scoprì che dietro a questo nome si nascondeva non un uomo ma una donna facoltosa: l'eccentrica parigina Mériora Gillibrand.
Dopo aver ucciso il suo amante a Vienna, prese senza indecisioni un altro sesso per sfuggire alla sua punizione. Insieme alla sua domestica, che era l'unica a sapere chi fosse realmente, fuggì sotto il nome di Arthur Hawarden. Così giunse a Ligneuville, dove alla fine morì di una malattia polmonare.
La sua straordinaria storia di vita costituì la base per un romanzo e fu persino adattata in un film nel 1968 dal regista belga Harry Kümel.
