Op het dorpskerhof van Ligneuville ligt het graf van een zekere mijnheer Arthur Hawarden. Pas na zijn dood ontdekte men dat achter deze naam geen man maar een welgestelde dame schuilging: de excentrieke Parisienne Mériora Gillibrand.
Nadat Mériora in Wenen haar minnaar had vermoord, nam ze zonder blikken of blozen een ander geslacht aan om haar straf te ontlopen. Samen met haar huishulp, die als enige wist wie ze echt was, sloeg ze op de vlucht als Arthur Hawarden. Zo kwam ze terecht in Ligneuville, waar ze uiteindelijk stierf aan een longziekte.
Haar buitengewone levensverhaal vormde de basis voor een roman en werd in 1968 zelfs verfilmd door de Belgische regisseur Harry Kümel.
