Cirka midt på Koningsdijk ligger der på højre side et rektangulært område med en stor vandpyt, en flagstang og en gård. Her stod engang den spanske Fort Spinola. I 1591 erobrede prins Maurits af Nassau midlertidigt byen Hulst fra spanierne. Der blev organiseret plundringstogter i Waasland. Blandt andet blev kirken i Sint-Gillis-Waas alvorligt beskadiget. Som svar byggede spanierne denne fæstning. Sandgrave og udvidelsen af en gård har dog gjort, at det i dag nærmest er usynligt.
