Abbediet Averbode ligger på grænsen af tre kommuner og provinser: Scherpenheuvel-Zichem (Vlaams-Brabant), Tessenderlo (Limburg) og Laakdal (Antwerpen). Allerede i middelalderen lå abbediet på grænsen mellem to fyrstendømmer: hertugdømmene Brabant og grevskabet Loon (i det 14. århundrede opslugt af fyrstebispedømmet Liège).
