Paul-Henri Spaak, 3 gange premier i Belgien, blev født i Schaarbeek og var også borgmester i Sint-Gillis. Efter Anden Verdenskrig var han den drivende kraft bag en supranational organisation i Europa. Han spiller en essentiel rolle i oprettelsen af det Europæiske Økonomiske Fællesskab i 1957. Det giver ham tilnavnet 'Mister Europe'. Også Benelux opstår delvist på hans initiativ.
Han døde i Braine-l'Alleud eller Eigenbrakel i 1972.
