Paul-Henri Spaak, 3 veces primer ministro de Bélgica, nació en Schaarbeek y también fue alcalde de Sint-Gillis. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue la fuerza impulsora detrás de una organización supranacional de Europa. Desempeñó un papel esencial en la creación de la Comunidad Económica Europea en 1957. Esto le valió el apodo de 'Mister Europe'. También la Benelux se creó en parte por su iniciativa.
Falleció en Braine-l'Alleud o Eigenbrakel en 1972.
