I boligen på Verbondsstraat 5 opholdt Karl Marx sig mellem 1845 og 1846. Friederich Engels boede dengang lige ved siden af ham på nr. 7. At Marx drog til Bruxelles var ikke en tilfældighed. Belgien havde dengang en af de mest progressive forfatninger, med en striks magtadskillelse og frihed til presse, sprog og forening. Belgien var et fristed for alle mulige revolutionærer: Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire og så mange andre fandt her et sikkert tilholdssted. Også mere for nylig var dette tilfældet: tænk blot på katalaneren Puigdemont.
