Grusomhederne i Chertal ligger ved bredden af Maas-floden, et par kilometer nedstrøms fra Liège. Som en del af ejendommen til ArcelorMittals metalproduktionsanlæg består de af tre vandflader omgivet af spontane skovområder (især piletræer) og ubebyggede områder. Stedet rummer flere sjældne plantearter som pilbladet sagittaria (Sagittaria sagittifolia), men det er især det ornithologiske aspekt, der gør stedet interessant.
