Joos Vijd voksede som ung i slottet Singelberg, hvor far Clais som borgfoged styrede slottet på vegne af grev Lodewijk af Male og hertug Filips den Stout, herrer af Beveren.
Fra slottet Singelberg kunne familien Vijd overvåge handelstrafikken på Schelde. Borgen dominerede omgivelserne og var derfor afgørende i alle de store militære konflikter, der fandt sted mellem det 14. og 16. århundrede. Slottet Singelberg dannede også ramme om den antwerpenske overgivelse til den italienske landfoged Alexander Farnese (1585, Freden i Antwerpen). I 1652 blev det stærkt forfaldne slot nedrevet. I dag står kun højen tilbage, hvor den imponerende borg engang stod.
