Joos Vijd groeide als jongeling op in het kasteel van Singelberg waar vader Clais als burchtvoogd het kasteel beheerde namens graaf Lodewijk van Male en hertog Filips de Stoute, heren van Beveren.
Vanuit het kasteel Singelberg kon de familie Vijd het handelsverkeer op de Schelde controleren. De burcht domineerde de omgeving en was dan ook cruciaal in alle grote militaire conflicten die zich afspeelden tussen de 14de en de 16de eeuw. Kasteel Singelberg vormde ook het decor van de Antwerpse overgave aan de Italiaanse landvoogd Alexander Farnese (1585, Vrede van Antwerpen). In 1652 werd het sterk vervallen kasteel afgebroken. Vandaag rest enkel nog de motteheuvel waar ooit de imposante burcht stond.
