Joos Vijd grew up as a young man in the castle of Singelberg, where father Clais managed the castle as castle guardian on behalf of Count Louis of Male and Duke Philip the Bold, lords of Beveren.
From Singelberg Castle, the Vijd family was able to control trade on the Scheldt. The castle dominated the area and was therefore crucial in all major military conflicts that took place between the 14th and 16th centuries. Singelberg Castle was also the setting for Antwerp's surrender to the Italian governor Alexander Farnese (1585, Treaty of Antwerp). In 1652 the ruined castle was demolished. Today, all that remains is the mound where the imposing castle once stood.
