Formentlig i midten af det tolvte århundrede opstod borgen Aremberg i Ahrgouw nær Aremberg. I 1166 blev Henrik af Arenberg nævnt som den første af den adelsfrie familie. Herrerne af Arenberg var i en periode burggreve af Köln. Børnene af burggreven blev i 1279 solgt til ærkebiskoppen af Köln. Omkring 1280 døde hovedgrenen af familien i mandlig linje ud. Som følge af Mechtilds ægteskab med greve Engelbert II af der Mark i 1299 kom ejendommet til dette hus.
