Ordet kapel stammer fra det latinske cappa = kappe, diminutivformen capella, og henviser til kappen af Sankt Martin, biskop af Tours. Sankt Martin gav sin halve kappe til en fattig, den halve kappe blev et relikvie og det rum hvor kappen blev opbevaret blev gennem metonymi capella eller kapel kaldt. Fra det 7. århundrede blev kapel et navn for et (lille) bedehus.
