Den gigantiske dæmning ved Twistestausee-reservoiret blev bygget mellem 1908 og 1914 for at sikre skibsfarten på Weser og Mittelland-kanalen tilstrækkeligt vand om sommeren. I 1943 bombede britterne muren og brugte bomber til at lave en brud på op til 70 m bred og 22 m dyb. Bølgen dræbte 68 mennesker og ødelagde adskillige hjem. Det er tilladt at gå på den ellers helt restaurerede dæmning.
