La gigantesca pared de la presa en el embalse de Twistestausee se construyó entre 1908 y 1914 para proporcionar suficiente agua en verano para la navegación en el Weser y el Canal Mittelland. En 1943, los británicos bombardearon la pared y utilizaron bombas para hacer una brecha de hasta 70 m de ancho y 22 m de profundidad. La ola de marea mató a 68 personas y destruyó numerosas casas. Caminar sobre la pared de la presa, que está completamente restaurada, está permitido.
