Som 17-årig teenager tænkte Felix Wankel (1902-1988) allerede, at det ville være meget mere effektivt at lade en 4-taktsmotor køre sine fire faser drejende i stedet for op- og nedadgående. I en alder af 22 etablerede han et eget værksted i Heidelberg, hvor han kunne udvikle sin idé, selvom han ikke var motorbygger. Senere ville han udvikle Wankel-motoren.
