Cuando era un adolescente de 17 años, Felix Wankel (1902-1988) ya pensaba que sería mucho más eficiente hacer que un motor de cuatro tiempos funcionara de manera continua en lugar de alternar entre movimientos ascendentes y descendentes. A los 22 años, estableció su propio taller en Heidelberg donde pudo desarrollar su idea, aunque no era un constructor de motores. Más tarde, desarrollaría el motor Wankel.
