Malente består af tre steder og ni sogne. Kommunen ligger midt i den Holstenske Schweiz. Den centrale bydel er Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen, som ligger mellem Dieksee og Kellersee.
Malente har med stationen Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen på jernbanelinjen Kiel–Lübeck forbindelser til Kiel og Lübeck hver halve time.
Derudover ligger Malente på jernbanelinjen Malente-Gremsmühlen–Lütjenburg. Her er jernbanetrafikken indstillet. Fra sommeren 2020 er der planlagt oprettelse af et draisinetrafik.
