Schmallenberg var centrum for metalindustrien i det 19. århundrede. Senere udviklede tekstilindustrien sig her. Byens kælenavn, "Strumpfstadt", refererer til Falke tekstilfabrikken, der laver strømper her. På nuværende tidspunkt arbejder en fjerdedel af befolkningen inden for træ-, skovbrug og turisme.
