Schmallenberg was the center of the metal industry in the 19th century. Later, the textile industry developed here. The nickname of the city, "Sock City," refers to the textile factory of Falke, which makes socks here. At the moment, a quarter of the population works in wood, forestry, and tourism. Schmallenberg has a number of hiking trails that lead through forests and over hills around the city, totaling more than 2,500 km.
