Det rumflyvnings-planetarium „Sigmund Jähn“ på Peißnitzøen i Halle var et mellemplanetarium med 130 sæder. Bygherren var byen Halle, og den 10. november 1978 blev det indviet efter en toårig byggefase. Planetariet bar navnet til ære for Sigmund Jähn, den første tyske kosmonaut.
Som planetariumprojektor blev Spacemaster DP2 fra Carl-Zeiss-værkerne i Jena anvendt; som den første af sin art var denne manuel og også fuldautomatisk styret. Planetariet havde desuden et observatorium udstyret med en Coudé-refraktor, der blev overtaget fra den astronomiske station Johannes Kepler i Halle-Kanena.
