Het ruimtevlucht-planetarium "Sigmund Jähn" op het Peißnitz-eiland in Halle was een middelgroot planetarium met 130 zitplaatsen. De bouwheer was de stad Halle en op 10 november 1978 werd het geopend na een bouwperiode van twee jaar. Het planetarium droeg de naam ter ere van Sigmund Jähn, de eerste Duitse kosmonaut.
Als planetariumprojector werd de Spacemaster DP2 van de Carl-Zeiss-Werken in Jena gebruikt, als eerste van zijn soort was deze handmatig en ook volledig automatisch bestuurbaar. Het planetarium had bovendien een sterrenwacht, uitgerust met een Coudé-refractor, die afkomstig was van de Astronomische Station Johannes Kepler uit Halle-Kanena.
