Rowohlt Forlaget blev grundlagt i 1908 i Leipzig. I dag er Rowohlt en del af en koncern af forlag i Hamborg og i Berlin. Siden 1982 har Rowohlt-forlagene været en del af forlagsgruppen Georg von Holtzbrinck.
Ernst Rowohlt grundlagde sit forlag i 1908, da han flyttede ind i forhusets berømte Offizin Drugulin i Leipzig. Den første bog, han udgav, var Lieder der Sommernächte af hans skoleven fra Bremen, Gustav Edzard, som viste sig at være usælgeligt. Hans stille partner blev Kurt Wolff, som efter personlige uoverensstemmelser med Rowohlt overtog forlaget i 1912 og blandt andet erhvervede rettighederne til Johannes R. Becher, Max Brod, Georg Heym og Franz Kafka. Tidlige forfattere fra huset var Paul Scheerbart, Herbert Eulenberg eller Max Dauthendey.
