De Rowohlt Verlag werd opgericht in 1908 in Leipzig. Tegenwoordig is Rowohlt onderdeel van een bedrijfsorganisatie van uitgeverijen in Hamburg en Berlijn. Sinds 1982 maken de Rowohlt uitgevers deel uit van de Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck.
Ernst Rowohlt richtte in 1908 zijn uitgeverij op, waarmee hij naar de voorzijde van de beroemde drukkerij Drugulin in Leipzig verhuisde. Het eerste boek dat hij publiceerde was Lieder der Sommernächte van zijn Bremer schoolvriend Gustav Edzard, het bleek onverkoopbaar te zijn. Zijn stille vennoot werd Kurt Wolff, die na persoonlijke geschillen met Rowohlt in 1912 de uitgeverij overnam en onder andere de rechten van Johannes R. Becher, Max Brod, Georg Heym en Franz Kafka verwierf. Vroege auteurs van het huis waren Paul Scheerbart, Herbert Eulenberg en Max Dauthendey.
