La editorial Rowohlt fue fundada en 1908 en Leipzig. Hoy, Rowohlt es parte de un grupo de empresas de editoriales en Hamburgo y Berlín. Desde 1982, las editoriales Rowohlt pertenecen al grupo editorial Georg von Holtzbrinck.
Ernst Rowohlt fundó su editorial en 1908, momento en el que se trasladó a la parte delantera de la famosa imprenta Drugulin en Leipzig. El primer libro que publicó fue "Canciones de las noches de verano" de su amigo escolar de Bremen, Gustav Edzard, que resultó ser imposible de vender. Su socio silencioso fue Kurt Wolff, quien, después de desacuerdos personales con Rowohlt, adquirió la editorial en 1912 y compró, entre otros, los derechos de Johannes R. Becher, Max Brod, Georg Heym y Franz Kafka. Los primeros autores de la casa fueron Paul Scheerbart, Herbert Eulenberg y Max Dauthendey.
