La casa editrice Rowohlt è stata fondata nel 1908 a Lipsia. Oggi Rowohlt fa parte di un gruppo di aziende editoriali ad Amburgo e Berlino. Dal 1982 le case editrici Rowohlt appartengono al gruppo editoriale Georg von Holtzbrinck.

Ernst Rowohlt fondò nel 1908 la sua casa editrice, trasferendosi nel frontone della celebre tipografia Drugulin a Lipsia. Il primo libro che pubblicò fu "Canzoni delle notti estive" del suo amico di scuola di Brema Gustav Edzard, che si rivelò invendibile. Il suo socio silenzioso divenne Kurt Wolff, il quale, dopo delle controversie personali con Rowohlt, assunse la casa editrice nel 1912 e acquisì, tra l'altro, i diritti di Johannes R. Becher, Max Brod, Georg Heym e Franz Kafka. I primi autori della casa furono Paul Scheerbart, Herbert Eulenberg e Max Dauthendey.
